We have the best traffic units in the State, Below are a few tips they have asked us to pass on to our motorist...
If your car is drivable after a crash, PLEASE move it out of the flow of traffic. They will still be able to tell who is at fault.
While they are on their way to you: Get your DL, Registration and Insurance Cards all together. That is the first things they will need.
Leave your car keys in the vehicle, take the rest with you.
If you have passengers with you, have their names, address and phone numbers ready. (This is to make sure they are covered for medical care with an insurance company, they also can let the Officier know what they saw if asked)
If anyone else who saw the crash stops, get their name & number if they are in a hurry. If they are able to give a report, make sure they park in a safe place. Even if it is in a parking lot a block away, just have them turn their flashers on, law enforcement will be able to find them and get a full report.
WARNING: Resist the need... Do not honk your horn while traffic is being held up by either clearing the road from a crash or in any place they are directing traffic. Many police have started writing tickets to a driver who honks their horn!
~~~ FOLLOW THE MOVE OVER LAW ~~~
SLOW DOWN as soon as you see flashing lights, of any type. MOVE OVER to the next lane, as soon as you safely can. The number of police and wrecker operators being killed on the roadway are growing each year. So many that each State has passed a move over law. They have also passed new laws for the type of vest those who work in or on the roadside wear. They can be seen much clearer and from futher away.
